Queer people are here, and they’re Cajun | The Current
In June, Pride Acadiana made a vibrant return to Downtown Lafayette, celebrating LGBTQ+ inclusion with a lively parade, block party, and an array of vendors and performers. Despite this, the visibility and acceptance of queer people in Acadiana remain limited outside urban centers. Local artists and activists, like Lex R. Thomas, emphasize the significant representation gap for queer Cajuns in rural areas. Stories from individuals such as John Arabie-White and Valerie Cahill highlight the ongoing challenges and resistance faced by the LGBTQ+ community in more conservative regions. However, initiatives like Mamou Pride and the evolving support in Lafayette offer hope for increased acceptance and visibility. This group show invites local artists to reflect on the audacious spirit embodied by the Marquis de Lafayette’s motto, “Cur Non” or “Why Not?” Among the featured artists is Lex R. Thomas, a queer, non-binary artist from Kaplan, Louisiana, whose figurative works explore themes of existentialism and interconnectedness through vibrant acrylics and detailed ink portraiture. Thomas, who began their artistic journey in Lafayette and has since showcased their work widely, contributes a unique perspective that embodies the daring and introspective spirit of the exhibition.
